I was craving pizza today, but I also felt like cooking, so this is what I came up with.
Ingredients:
1 Pita bag with medium pitas ($2.25 for the flour pitas)
1 Can of tomato sauce (.99 cents)
4 Tablespoons of mozzarella cheese (2 tbsps per pizza) $3.99 for bag
1 Package of cheddar cheese sausages ($2.99)
1 Bottle of tomatillo salsa (optional) $2.99
Steps:
Step 1: Preheat oven to 300 degrees
Step 2: Spray baking pan with oil or rub oil on pan
Step 3: Place one pita on oiled pan or more depending on size of baking pan you decide to use. Foil or cookie sheet will work just fine
Step 4: Pour tomato sauce on pita and spread the sauce all over the pita
Step 5: Sprinkle herbs and salt on pita (not necessary, but I sprinkled cilantro and salt on sauce)
Step 6: Spread tomatillo salsa on pita (not necessary, but I love this salsa)
Step 6: Cut sausage into small pieces and pan fry them (my favorite are cheddar filled sausages. You can use pepperoni, ground beef, chicken, you choose!)
Step 7: Place sausage pieces on pita. (Note, they are not burnt. The cheese gets crispy and turns a golden/brown color)
Step 8: Place pita in oven for 8-10 minutes
Step 9: Pull pan out of oven and add cheese. Cover with pan to let cheese melt
***Last 2 pictures show alternate deviations to steps 6-9. Alternatively, cook the entire sausage in a frying pan covered on medium heat. Once cooked (about 5 minutes), take sausage out of pan and cut into pieces. Place pieces on pita and drop shredded cheese on top. Bake for 5-8 minutes or until cheese is melted.
After tasting both, I would do the 2nd approach from now on since the cheese was well melted, it was quicker to make and it tasted great. But either way will result in a delicious, quick pizza.
